Same windmill as [link] more of me tromping around in some farmers field.

I really liked this angle, showed off the amazing detail of the contraption. also made for an interestingly weighted photrograph.

I agree that these wind pumps are fascinating and it's nice to see one with all it's sails on for a change - The ones around here have all been let to go derelict like this one ([link]). It's also intersting to see that the design doesn't change that much either side of the Atlantic :)

well, thats kinda sad, to see them go... alot of the ones i saw (which was quite a few) were indeed operational, this one was drawing water for cattle. I was really amazed how often they were used, and sometimes it was even residences drawing water by pump. there was almost nowhere in the country i passed thru without them, and once i got into the west, the huge modern electric turbine ones became prevalent, which was something i had never seen.
Heh, i would imagine that they are, as they do the same thing yea? ;p

Hehe, very true.

Much of the pasture where I live has been converted to cornfields now, so they don't need to provide water for cattle anymore. Also, most farms here are quite small so it's probably cheaper now to run a pipe from the water main to the water trough than it is to maintain a wind pump. It's a pity really as they add a bit of character to a landscape
